It has come to my attention that more and more people are looking for healthier alternatives to traditional snacks such as biscuits, chocolate and crisps. This is great. We should all be trying to cut down on processed food and eating much more wholesome nourishing foods the majority of the time. However, I do think that there is a slight misconception that you can eat as much of these ‘healthy’ foods as you like and not gain weight. This simply isn’t the case. All foods contain calories, and in terms of fat loss; calories are king.
Take coconut oil for example; it is brilliant. There are lots of studies now revealing the numerous health benefits which come from incorporating it into your diet. BUT it is still a form of fat. A calorie dense form of fat at that. 10g Coconut Oil = 10g Fat = 90 calories. If you are adding it willynilly to every meal you have over the course of the week on the pretence that it is good for you then you are possibly adding in an extra 2000 calori
es to your weekly intake without even realising it. Not the greatest idea if you are trying to lose fat.
Nuts, dried fruit and seeds are another great example of foods which people consume in excess without acknowledging the amount of calories which they are in fact putting away.
‘In just 4 walnuts there are 100 calories; in 22 cashew nuts there are 200 calories and in just 50 grams of raisins there are 150 calories.’
Who can plough through a bag of chocolate covered raisins without even realising it/stopping for air? I know I definitely could if left to my own devices mind
lessly watching something on tv or at the cinema. So if you were to treat yourself to the bag from Marks and Spencer’s, you would be looking at a whopping 531 calories!! And the chances are that they would not fill you up and you would be hungry and opening the cupboard doors once again within half an hour!
Another popular food item around at the moment are the ‘healthy’ bars and cakes, such as flapjacks and brownies. Yes, these flapjacks may only use ‘good fats’ such as different nut butters and oils, but at the end of the day, they are still fats, and fat is very calorie dense. I saw the calorie breakdown for one such product recently which came out at nearly 400 calories! The simple truth is you would actually have been better off eating a Cadbury Dairy Milk.
I think what Joe Wicks (The Body Coach) has done for the health and fitness industry is brilliant. He has made people excited about food again with his quirky 15 second videos, he has made cooking look easy which is what the majority of us want and need at the end of a long day when we are starving and just want to eat. However if you were to cook some of his recipes thinking that they were all good for you over the course of a week, then you would be mistaken I’m afraid. Take for example his Chicken Pie, you are looking at over 600 calories per portion if you were to follow his recipe using double cream, oil, butter and filo pastry and that’s without adding any sides!! Simply not a great idea for somebody looking to lose weight. Other recipes use full fat coconut milk, lots of avocados, chorizo and coconut oil in abundance etc. Again, I am not saying that you should avoid them; BUT they do contain calories, and calories are king at the end of the day.
Okay, so I am not saying to ditch all foods that you have been told are healthy; I am definitely not doing that. In fact I probably eat everything which I have men
tioned above over the course of a week (except the chocolate raisins – I simply can’t be trusted!) What I am saying is that you need to become a lot more mindful of what you are consuming if fat loss is your goal.
You must realise that adding glugfuls of olive oil to all your food; snacking mindlessly on almonds or dried mango whilst at your desk; slicing up a whole avocado into your salad every day, eating dark chocolate as it is better for you than the milk stuff and drinking fruit smoothies on the regular is adding calories to your diet. Yes they are all healthy and good for you, full of nutrients and vitamins; but they should still be consumed in moderation. So if your fat loss journey has stalled and you don’t know why, maybe take a closer look at what you have been consuming and see if you have been guilty of what this post has touched upon.
